Incentives for Electrically Heated Homes

Eligibility Criteria

An eligible participant for the heat pump program must:

  • Be an Enbridge Gas customer who primarily heats their home with a natural gas furnace or boiler OR is connected to the Ontario electricity grid and heats their home electrically (must be applicable to the home where the heat pump will be installed)
  • Own the home where the heat pump will be installed. Where an owner has tenants, the owner must apply
  • Be the one responsible for paying for the purchase and installation of the heat pump system
  • Sign a Participant Agreement

Residence Elegibility

An eligible participant for the heat pump program must:

  • Be a single detached, semi-detached, row house, townhome, or mobile home on a permanent foundation
  • New build homes do not qualify for the program. The home must have achieved at least 6 months of occupancy to become eligible for the program
  • Be the first-time installation of a heat pump system at the home. Homes with an existing heat pump system do not qualify (no replacements)

Equipment Eligibility

An eligible participant for the heat pump program must:

  • Be a cold climate air source heat pump or ground source heat pump as listed on Natural Resource Canada’s (NRCan) qualified product list
  • Centrally ducted, partially ducted, and ductless mini-splits all qualify

Does not Qualify:

  • De-listed, inactive, archived units, or units in transition on the NRCan list
  • Air source heat pumps that do not have the cold climate designation
  • Water to water, brine-to-water, or direct exchange ground source heat pumps

The installed heat pump must also:

  • Be capable of distributing heat throughout the entire conditioned space in the home, including the basement (if applicable)
  • Be capable of operating year round
  • Include all system components (indoor and outdoor units, or furnace/ air handler as applicable)
  • Meet an approved NRCan sizing option (ccASHPs)
    • Enbridge gas customers – sizing options A,B,C,D permitted
    • Electrically heated homes – sizing options C or D permitted

Backup Heating Sources

  • Existing or new backup heating sources may be used including a gas furnace or electric resistance
  • If an existing backup heating source is being used, it should be compatible with the new heat pump and not introduce any comfort issues or negatively impact energy efficiency
  • For gas customers, and in situations where the natural gas furnace is being replaced with a new natural gas furnace, the new heat pump system must be part of an eligible combination unit to qualify
  • Backup heating sources do not qualify for the rebate

Eligible Payment Options

  • Upfront purchase or financing is accepted
  • Rental, lease, lease to own will not be permitted upon program launch. Program team working to incorporate at a later date
  • If a homeowner has already received, or is expecting to receive, a heat pump rebate/incentive from any other Enbridge, IESO Save on Energy, utility or federal/provincial/municipal program they are not eligible to participate
  • If heat pump applications have already been submitted in the Enbridge HER program or the IESO HESP program, do not resubmit (even if the heat pump is not yet installed).
